The story of incredibricks

Hi, I’m Chris 👋

Like many, I grew up building and playing with a wide range of LEGO® sets.

At some point the obsession faded away, until recently when my eldest received her first LEGO® set and I was hit with a wave of nostalgia for those colourful bricks.

I quickly went in search of some sets to build myself, and here I faced my first dilemma…

Choices, choices

Problem #1: Choice.

LEGO® have released literally thousands of incredible sets, geared toward all ages, interests, and abilities. Where do I possibly begin?

Star Wars™ has a strong place in my heart, so too does Harry Potter™, each of which has dozens of possible sets to pick from. It also looks like it would be fun to build the Great Pyramid of Giza, or the house from Disney’s ‘Up’, or the Ghostbusters™ car, or… wait… does that Lighthouse actually work??

As if the sheer amount of choice wasn’t bad enough, LEGO® are churning out new sets so often it will be nigh on impossible to collect them all. Don’t linger, however, as LEGO® are equally quick to retire sets, meaning you may no longer be able to easily find that set you’ve previously had your heart set on.

While browsing for the next set to build there’s something else I’ve noticed as well…

How much‽

Five-hundred quid?! What’s it made of, gold??

There’s no way I can justify spending that much. In fact, quite a few of these are in the triple digits…

Yup, problem number 2: Cost.

It turns out LEGO® sets can cost a pretty penny.

Now don’t get me wrong, I think the price is somewhat reasonable given the incredible complexity and detail in the designs, the consistently high levels of quality, and the general longevity of LEGO® we all expect.

But still, with the average set costing upward of £50, the price tag remains a bitter pill to swallow.

The unfortunate reality is that price can be a big roadblock for many who long to build more of the latest and greatest sets but simply can’t afford to – myself included!

Taking a step back for a moment, even if I could afford to buy all of the sets I crave, there’s another issue…

‘You’re going to need a bigger boat.’

The 3rd problem: Space.

Between my daughter’s first few sets, and some late-night browsing of online auctions by me, we’ve accrued about 10 sets so far.

However, it only takes 7 to use up the last remaining shelf space we have available.

So what happens to the rest? We take them apart, stick them back in the box, then up into the loft to be “found” again in a few years time.

This doesn’t really feel like we’re getting the most bang for our buck.

(They also get surprisingly dusty, and are a pain to clean!)

Recap

Okay, so we’ve established there’s a lot of LEGO® sets to choose from, it’s going to cost a small fortune to buy them all, and even when I can afford them I’ve got nowhere to put them.

And I’m still no closer to building that UCS Millenium Falcon™ (retailing for an eye-watering £734.99) 😭

Well, it turns out I'm not alone, there’s actually a lot of other people in a similar situation to me… 🤔

‘Hang on a minute lads, I’ve got a great idea.’

Rather than buying set after set, why not borrow them instead 🤯, just like you would a book from the library. Build it, display it, play with it, the choice is yours… before returning it and getting ready for the next one.

And that’s exactly what I’ve set out to do with incredibricks.

  • Choice: an ever-growing library of LEGO® sets means there’ll always be plenty to of choice, from the very latest to those that have now been retired… check.
  • Space: borrowing LEGO® sets one or two at a time means you don’t need to worry about where you’ll store them (and no more dusting either!)… check.
  • Cost: and best of all, renting LEGO® costs a fraction of the price compared to buying the sets outright… check.

The journey so far…

We’re still in the early stages and growing our library but welcoming new members to sign up and start renting sets. Leave your details below and we’ll be in touch with details on how to rent your first set.
